What are fake crystals usually made of?

Most fake crystal bracelets are one of three things: glass (the majority, often with dye or coatings), dyed low-grade stone such as agate or marble passed off as something pricier, and plastic or resin at the cheapest end. Each has a signature failure. Glass is softer than quartz and carries telltale round air bubbles. Dyed stone concentrates its color in surface cracks. Plastic is light, warm to the touch, and scratches with a fingernail’s persistence.

Check 1: the hardness test

Real quartz-family crystals sit at Mohs hardness 7, which means a steel point (about 5.5) cannot scratch them; glass, at roughly 5.5, scratches far more easily. This single fact filters out most fakes, because most fakes are glass.

Note the two-way logic. A “quartz” bead that scratches easily is fake. But a fluorite that is suspiciously scratch-proof is also wrong: real fluorite is soft, and a hard “fluorite” is probably glass. Practical version of the test on a bracelet you own: look at the beads after a month of desk wear. Real quartz stays unmarked; glass accumulates fine scratches visible against the light.

Check 2: the temperature test

Real crystal feels distinctly cool at first touch and warms slowly in the hand; glass warms noticeably faster, and plastic feels room-temperature immediately.   • Color sitting in cracks means dyed stone. Dyed agate and marble concentrate pigment in surface fissures, visible under magnification or even a close phone photo.
  • Every bead identical means a mold. Natural beads from one strand are siblings, not clones; tiny variations in tone and interior are the fingerprint of real material.

The stone-specific signatures help too: real strawberry quartz shows its needle inclusions plainly, real moonstone’s glow moves as the stone turns (a static shimmer is a coating), and real blue tiger’s eye has a light band that travels. A stone’s honest flaws are its certificate.

Check 4: the weight test

Real stone is dense; plastic and resin are conspicuously light. A full bracelet of 8mm quartz beads has a definite, satisfying heft, while a resin copy of the same size feels like costume jewelry. Glass sits closer to real stone in weight, so this check mainly rules out the cheapest tier of fakes, but it takes two seconds and no skill: bounce the bracelet gently in your palm.
