什么是流年

流年（Liu Nian）是 BaZi 里每一年的能量场，作为外力作用于你的命盘和大运。具体说，流年 = 当年的年柱（60 甲子轮回里的某一对干支）。

• 2025 年 = 乙巳年

流年怎么算

流年的算法很简单，查你想要的年份对应的干支就行。但是要注意一个边界：流年不是从公历 1 月 1 日开始切换，而是从立春切换。

具体规则：

• 立春之前（通常 2 月 4 日左右）还属于上一年的流年
• 立春之后才进入新一年的流年

所以如果你出生在 2 月初，要确认是不是过了立春，过了就是新年的年柱，没过就还是去年的。这跟普通的“农历春节算新年”不一样，八字按节气切年。

具体到工具的算法层面，流年算法对应内部「年柱算法子函数」（从立春 JD 切年）。这部分代码逻辑跟年柱算法一致，只是输入的是“当前年份”而不是出生年份。

流年跟大运怎么交互

流年和大运不是独立运行的，而是叠加在你的命盘上。三层一起决定你“现在的能量状态”。

流年不预测具体事件

民间常说“今年我会不会找到对象 / 找到工作 / 发财”，这种问题流年回答不了。流年说的是“你今年的能量状态”，不是“今年会发生什么具体事”。

具体说：

• 流年用神：今年的能量环境帮你 → 这一年通常做事相对顺，但不保证特定事情发生
• 流年忌神：今年的能量环境拧着你 → 这一年通常做事相对费力，但不保证特定事情不发生
• 中性流年：能量环境中性 → 看你怎么应对

我可以查到自己今年的流年吗？

可以。最简单的方式是跑 BaZi 测算，工具会按当前年份自动告诉你今年的流年是什么干支、对你来说是用神年还是忌神年。手算需要查万年历（60 甲子表），也要注意立春切年问题。

流年是不是从 1 月 1 日开始？

不是。流年按立春切年，通常是 2 月 4 日左右（每年精确时间略有不同，基于地球公转角度）。如果你出生在 1 月或 2 月初，要查精确立春时刻才能确定属于哪一年的年柱。

流年跟生肖年有关系吗？

What is Liu Nian

Liu Nian is the annual energy field in BaZi, an external influence on your chart and Da Yun. Specifically, Liu Nian = the year pillar of the current year (a heavenly stem + earthly branch pair within the 60-character cycle).

Examples:

• 2024 = Jia Chen year (heavenly stem Jia, earthly branch Chen)
• 2025 = Yi Si year
• 2026 = Bing Wu year

Each year’s stem and branch carry their own Five Elements (Wu Xing, 五行) attributes, enter your chart and current Da Yun, and produce a new energy combination. This combination is your “this year’s energy baseline.”

Key things about Liu Nian:

• Liu Nian is an external influence, not the chart itself
• It changes every year, following the 60-character cycle (60-year period)

How Liu Nian is calculated

Calculating Liu Nian is simple, look up the heavenly stem + earthly branch for the year you want. But there’s a boundary to note: Liu Nian doesn’t switch on January 1st of the civil calendar; it switches at Lichun (Beginning of Spring).

Specific rules:

• Before Lichun (typically around February 4th), the year pillar still belongs to the previous year
• After Lichun, the new year pillar takes effect

So if you were born in early February, you need to confirm whether Lichun has passed. If yes, it’s the new year’s pillar; if not, it’s still the previous year’s. This differs from the “Lunar New Year = new year” convention; BaZi switches years at solar terms.

In the tool’s algorithmic terms, Liu Nian calculation corresponds to the internal “year-pillar sub-function” (which switches years at Lichun JD). The code logic matches the year-pillar calculation; the only difference is the input year (current year vs birth year).

How Liu Nian and Da Yun interact

Liu Nian and Da Yun aren’t independent; they overlay on your chart together. Three layers decide your “current energy state.”

• Your natal Yong Shen is Fire, currently in a “Water Da Yun” (a Ji Shen Da Yun), the Da Yun runs against you
• But this year is “Bing Wu” (extremely Fire-strong), the Liu Nian fills Fire and partially offsets the Water of the Da Yun

Liu Nian doesn’t predict specific events

Colloquially, “will I find a partner / job / wealth this year?”, these questions Liu Nian can’t answer. Liu Nian describes “this year’s energy state,” not “what specific events will happen this year.”

Specifically:

• Yong Shen Liu Nian: this year’s energy environment supports you, things tend to go relatively smoothly, but no guarantee of specific events
• Ji Shen Liu Nian: this year’s energy environment runs against you, things tend to feel relatively effortful, but no guarantee specific events won’t happen
• Neutral Liu Nian: energy environment is neutral, outcome depends on how you respond

Specific events depend on: your choices + your specific situation + the Liu Nian energy tendency + Da Yun background + natal chart, five layers of factors working together. Ziping School only describes the energy structure (the foundational tendency layer); it doesn’t predict specific manifestations.

If you want to do something (change jobs, move abroad, start a relationship), Liu Nian can only tell you “the current energy environment is supportive or resistant,” not “doing it will lead to X.” The latter is your life choice, not something the tool can calculate.

Can I look up my Liu Nian for this year?

Yes. The simplest way is to run the BaZi reading; the tool automatically tells you what this year’s Liu Nian is in stem-branch terms, and whether it’s a Yong Shen year or Ji Shen year for you. Manual calculation requires consulting a perpetual calendar (60-character table) and watching for the Lichun boundary.

Does Liu Nian start on January 1st?

No. Liu Nian switches at Lichun (Beginning of Spring), typically around February 4th (the precise time varies year to year, based on Earth’s orbital angle). If you were born in January or early February, you need to check the precise Lichun timing to determine which year’s pillar applies.

Does Liu Nian relate to the zodiac year?

Yes, related. Zodiac signs cycle by earthly branch (Zi = rat, Chou = ox, Yin = tiger, Mao = rabbit…); Liu Nian also cycles by earthly branch. The “earthly branch” part is shared. But Liu Nian is the full stem-branch pair (e.g., “Jia Chen year” = stem Jia + branch Chen); zodiac only looks at the branch (Chen = dragon). So “the year of the dragon” can map to Jia Chen, Bing Chen, Wu Chen, Geng Chen, or Ren Chen, one of five (60-year cycle, 5 dragon years per cycle). The same dragon year has a different actual energy ratio.

What should I do in a “bad” Liu Nian?

Ziping School isn’t a luck-prediction divination, and Liu Nian isn’t a “good year / bad year” verdict. A “Ji Shen Liu Nian” only says this year’s energy environment runs against you, it doesn’t say “this year you’ll have bad luck.” How to respond: once you recognize the energy environment, choose to do things that work with the environment (rather than against it). On the crystal layer, you can stack a Ji Shen-counterbalance supporting stone, but a crystal isn’t “luck insurance,” it’s a state-matching tool.

Does the tool automatically update recommendations based on Liu Nian?

Yes. Mio&Gem’s tool calculates Liu Nian based on the current date every time you run the reading; you don’t need to specify it manually. What is the Day Master

The Day Master is the heavenly stem of your birth day in a BaZi chart, sitting in the fifth position out of the eight characters. It represents you and is the core of how the entire chart is read.

The Di Tian Sui (Jing Tu, late Yuan / early Ming) states: “With the Day [Master] as the primary sovereign, and the controlling element of the Monthly Command as the target, the Year and Hour pillars are weighed for the fluctuations of fortune.” This sentence anchors the Ziping School “Day Master first” algorithm, distinguishing it from earlier traditions that read charts year-first.

When you open your BaZi chart, you’ll see eight Chinese characters arranged into four pillars:

• Year pillar (heavenly stem + earthly branch of birth year)
• Month pillar (heavenly stem + earthly branch of birth month)

How your Day Master is calculated

Calculating your Day Master requires first converting your birth time (year/month/day/hour) into the BaZi four pillars; the heavenly stem of the day pillar is your Day Master. Mio&Gem’s tool does this automatically.

At the algorithm layer, the Mio&Gem BaZi tool calculates the Day Master in four steps:

1. Convert civil birth time to precise Julian Day (the base time frame)
2. Use NOAA astronomical algorithms to calculate Solar Terms (Jie Qi, 节气), the month pillar requires switching at solar terms with minute-precision
3. True solar time correction based on birth location longitude (4 minutes per degree, eastward runs faster)
4. Derive the eight characters across four pillars; the day pillar’s heavenly stem is your Day Master

The day pillar’s heavenly stem itself is a fixed mathematical operation based on Julian Day modulo 60, independent of birth location. Your Day Master only depends on your birth date (after true solar time correction).

Why this much precision? Because the Day Master is the most consequential character in your chart. If your birth time falls near a solar term boundary (month switch), or if you were born in a location with significant longitude offset, a coarse tool may give the wrong day’s heavenly stem, and the wrong Day Master cascades into a fully wrong chart reading. What Day Master strength means

Day Master strength refers to how strong or weak your birth day’s heavenly stem reads within the entire chart, your “innate energy foundation.” Ziping School divides Day Master strength into 6 levels: extremely strong, strong, mid-strong, mid-weak, weak, extremely weak.

Determining strength comes down to two things:

• How much energy supports you (same element as your Day Master, or elements that generate yours)
• How much energy drains you (elements that overcome you, those you overcome, those you generate)

If support outweighs drain → Day Master is strong (energy abundant). If drain outweighs support → Day Master is weak (energy under-resourced).

Example: if your Day Master is Jia Wood (Wood element), then Water and Wood support you, Metal overcomes you, Fire and Earth deplete you. If the chart has lots of Water and Wood → your Day Master is strong; little of those → your Day Master is weak.

The Di Tian Sui also says: “Reduce the excessive, augment the deficient, to attain the Mean.” This is the highest principle for assessing Day Master strength, the goal isn’t “strong is good” or “weak is bad,” it’s balance.

A balanced chart is relatively stable. An unbalanced chart needs “what energy to use to adjust it.” That leads to the next section: how Day Master strength shapes Mio&Gem’s crystal recommendation.

How the Day Master decides your crystal direction

Day Master strength sets the direction Mio&Gem’s tool takes when recommending a main crystal. If the Day Master is weak, the tool recommends crystals carrying energy that supports it; if the Day Master is strong, the tool recommends crystals that channel or restrain it.

The logic:

• Day Master weak: chart needs filling; tool recommends crystals matching “elements like yours” or “elements that generate yours”
• Day Master strong: chart needs releasing; tool recommends crystals matching “elements you generate” or “elements that overcome you”
• Balanced: tool recommends based on whichever element the chart shows least overall

Which specific crystal gets picked depends on a combined judgment of Day Master strength + Monthly Command (the energy of your birth month) + Five Elements (Wu Xing) generation and overcoming. The Day Master maps to one of the Five Elements, your “innate energy baseline.” Ten heavenly stems map to five elements, each with yin and yang variants, totaling 10 Day Masters.

How do I find out my Day Master?

What is Da Yun

Da Yun is a 10-year life cycle in your BaZi chart, representing the macro-energy environment you live through. The chart is the energy structure you were born with, Da Yun is the “scenery along the way,” your fixed birth chart cycles through different energy environments over different 10-year stretches.

Each person’s Da Yun arrangement is unique (unless birth times are identical), so two people with identical BaZi charts can still see very different “scenery along the way” if their genders differ, the difference shapes very different life trajectories.

How Da Yun is arranged

Calculating Da Yun needs three pieces of information: your birth month pillar (the starting point), your gender (decides direction), and your year pillar yin/yang (also decides direction).

Step one, decide forward or backward:

How Da Yun shifts your chart

Da Yun does not replace the chart; it overlays the chart. How the overlay works:

The Da Yun’s heavenly stem and earthly branch each carry their own Five Elements (Wu Xing, 五行) attribute. These two characters’ energy enters your natal chart and produces generation/overcoming relationships with the eight original characters. The result: your chart’s Five Element ratio, Yong Shen, Xi Shen, and Ji Shen may all shift slightly.

Example:

• Your natal chart: Fire 30%, Wood 25%, Water 20%, Earth 15%, Metal 10% (Fire-strong, Metal lowest)
• Natal Yong Shen: maybe Metal (Metal overcomes the over-strong Wood, balancing the chart)
• Entering a new Da Yun: heavenly stem is Ren Water, earthly branch is Zi Water
• After overlay: Water energy adds substantially; new ratio is Water 35%, Fire 25%, others unchanged

Da Yun is not a “good luck / bad luck” prediction

Colloquially, “having Da Yun” is sometimes equated with “having good luck.” This is a misconception. Da Yun in Ziping School means “what kind of energy environment you’re going through,” not “good luck” or “bad luck.”

Specifically:

• Entering a “Yong Shen Da Yun” (when the Da Yun’s stem/branch matches your Yong Shen or Xi Shen): the energy environment supports you; this 10 years runs relatively smooth
• Entering a “Ji Shen Da Yun” (when Da Yun matches your Ji Shen): the energy environment runs against you; this 10 years feels challenging
• Entering a “neutral Da Yun” (neither Yong Shen nor Ji Shen): the energy environment is neutral; outcome depends on how you respond

But even a “Ji Shen Da Yun” isn’t necessarily a “bad period.” Returning to Di Tian Sui: “When the unfavorable gains geographical advantage… its inauspiciousness is not absolute.” A Ji Shen Da Yun, met with the right response, can be a “tempering” growth period, not pure attrition.

Which Da Yun step am I in right now?

Does Da Yun shift always come with a major life event?

Not necessarily. A shift is an energy environment switch. Whether something dramatic happens in life depends on the chart + Da Yun + Liu Nian + how you respond. Some people see clear life events at shift (new job, move, relationship change); others see no surface change but internal state shift. Ziping School describes energy structure, not specific events.

What does “before start age” mean? (childhood)

The years before start age are called “childhood pre-Da-Yun.” For example, if you start Da Yun 1 at age 7, ages 0 – 6 are childhood. There’s no formal Da Yun in childhood; influence runs primarily from the month pillar and year pillar. Mio&Gem’s tool uses Da Yun step 1 as a rough approximation in childhood (a simplification), but a child’s state is mostly shaped by family environment, so crystal recommendations have limited relevance there.

Da Yun vs Liu Nian, which matters more?

Da Yun is the 10-year “environmental baseline”; Liu Nian is each year’s “catalyst.” The two work together, but Da Yun has slightly higher priority, Da Yun decides overall direction; Liu Nian decides specific activation points within that year. So “the same Liu Nian in a good Da Yun” vs “the same Liu Nian in a bad Da Yun” feels very different; the same year reads as opportunity or trouble depending on the Da Yun frame.

Can I prepare crystals in advance for the next Da Yun?

Yes. If you’re 28 and know you’ll shift Da Yun at 30, you can spend ages 28 – 30 understanding the new Da Yun’s energy structure and choose crystals matched to the next stage. But Mio&Gem’s tool defaults to recommending based on your current age, so to see the recommendation for, say, age 32, you’d need to manually tell the tool “calculate as if I’m 32,” or wait until you actually reach 32 and run the reading again.

BaZi 是什么

BaZi（Eight Characters，八字）是基于出生时间的古典命理系统，用四柱八个汉字记录你的出生时刻，通过五行配比和用神判断分析能量结构。它不预测具体事件，描述的是能量倾向。

简史：BaZi 的雏形在汉代到唐代逐步成形（早期重年柱），到宋代由徐子平改革成“以日为主”的算法体系，这套体系就是后来八百年命理学界的主流，叫做子平派。Mio&Gem 工具用的就是这一派。

BaZi 命盘的 8 个字

BaZi 命盘由 4 柱组成（年柱、月柱、日柱、时柱），每柱 2 个字（天干 + 地支），合计 8 个汉字。这就是“八字”这个名字的来源。

每柱的结构：

为什么是 4 柱 × 2 字 = 8 个字？因为 BaZi 设计是用 4 段时间维度（年/月/日/时）记录出生时刻，每段用天干 + 地支两个字表达（天干像“高频信号”，地支像“低频底色”）。

BaZi 怎么判断“你需要什么”：用神

用神（Yong Shen） 是 BaZi 命盘整体结构里最需要补的那一股能量，不是简单“占比最低的元素”。用神是 BaZi 推断的核心输出，也是 Mio&Gem 工具决定主石属性的依据。

用神的关键澄清：用神不是“五行占比最低的那个”，这是大众对 BaZi 最常见的误解。用神的真实算法要综合判断日主属性、日主旺衰、月令状态、五行相生相克结构 4 个维度。

举例：如果你日主是火，命局里水占比 5%（最低），但日主已经过弱、火也偏低，那用神不是水（水克火让你更弱），而是木（木生火，是你真正需要的）。

《子平真诠》（沈孝瞻，清代）说：「八字用神，专求月令，以日干配月令地支，而生剋不同，格局分焉。」（白话：八字里的用神，要从月令中寻找。把日干（日主）和月令的地支搭配起来，根据它们之间相生相克的不同，八字的格局就分出来了。）这一句话奠定了子平派用神算法的最权威源头：月令决定格局，格局决定用神。Mio&Gem 工具的用神算法直接对应这个原则。

大运（Da Yun） 是 10 年一步的生命阶段，代表你后天经历的宏观能量环境。每个人一生大运按 8 步排出来（覆盖大约 80 年的人生主体），从命盘月柱顺推或逆推。大运不替换命盘，是叠加在命盘上的，跟命盘的 8 个字发生生克关系，结果是你这 10 年的整体五行配比、用神、喜忌都可能微调。

流年（Liu Nian） 是每一年的能量场，作为外力作用于命盘原局和当前大运。流年按立春切年，每年换一组天干地支组合（60 年一个完整周期）。流年比大运的能量影响小一些，但每年都换，是“当年的催化剂”。

BaZi 跟五行的关系

五行（Wu Xing，Five Elements） 是 BaZi 的基础语言。BaZi 的所有计算都是用五行（金木水火土）的相生相克来推演的，没有五行就没有 BaZi。

具体怎么挂钩：

• 每个天干对应一种五行（甲乙→木，丙丁→火，等等）
• 每个地支也对应一种五行（子→水，午→火，等等）
• 你的命盘 8 个字一旦定下来，整张盘的五行配比就出来了
• 然后通过相生相克的关系，算出日主旺衰、用神、喜忌

相生相克 是判断喜忌的依据：相生是木→火→土→金→水→木的孕育链，相克是木克土、土克水、水克火、火克金、金克木的制约链。

关于 BaZi 的几个常见问题

BaZi 是不是迷信？

BaZi 的算法层是数学化的，建立在天文计算（节气、真太阳时）和五行结构（相生相克）之上，每一步可推导、可手算复现。这一层不是迷信。解读层（同一个用神怎么对应到具体生活场景）依赖经验，是经验科学，不是占卜。Mio&Gem 工具只做算法层，不做事件预测。

BaZi 能预测未来吗？

BaZi 跟生肖、星座有什么不同？

BaZi 是 4 柱 8 字（年月日时干支），衡量维度更细。生肖只看年份的地支（属相），是 BaZi 12 选 1 的简化。星座按出生月份对应黄道 12 区段，跟 BaZi 的天文基础不同（BaZi 用节气，星座用太阳黄经分段）。三者算的不是同一件事：BaZi 看能量结构（最细），生肖看年的能量底色（最粗），星座看个性倾向（中等）。

我没有精确出生时间，还能算 BaZi 吗？

可以但不完整。BaZi 4 柱里的年柱、月柱、日柱不依赖时辰（只要知道出生年月日就能算），所以三柱仍然有效。缺的是时柱。时柱影响命盘约 25% 的能量配比，缺时柱的话用神判断的精度会下降，但基础推荐还是能给出。如果时辰只是不太精确（差 1-2 小时），可以跑两个版本对比看推荐是否一致。

BaZi 测算的结果会不会随时间变化？

命盘部分（8 个字）不变，那是先天定下来的。但你的用神、喜忌、推荐水晶会随大运（10 年一换）和流年（每年微调）而变化。所以你 30 岁戴的水晶，到 40 岁可能就该换了，不是水晶本身的问题，是你的能量环境换了。每年跑一次 BaZi 测算就能拿到当年最适配的推荐。

Mio&Gem 工具的 BaZi 解读跟其他 app 准吗？

What BaZi is

BaZi (Eight Characters, 八字) is a classical reading system based on birth time, recording your birth moment with four pillars of eight characters and analyzing energy structure through Wu Xing ratio and Yong Shen judgment. It does not predict specific events; it describes energy tendencies.

A short history: BaZi took shape from Han through Tang (early forms emphasized the year pillar). In the Song dynasty, Xu Zi-Ping reformed it into a “Day Master first” system, which became the dominant BaZi tradition for the next 800 years. It is called the Ziping School. The 8 characters of a BaZi chart

A BaZi chart has 4 pillars (year, month, day, hour), each pillar with 2 characters (heavenly stem + earthly branch), totaling 8 Chinese characters. That’s where the name “Eight Characters” comes from.

The structure of each pillar:

Earthly branches number 12: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. Each also maps to one Five Element (Zi → Water, Wu → Fire, etc.).

Why 4 pillars × 2 characters = 8? Because BaZi is designed to record your birth moment across 4 time dimensions (year/month/day/hour), each expressed in two characters: stem (the “high-frequency signal”) and branch (the “low-frequency baseline”).

The most critical of the 8 is the Day Master (Ri Zhu, 日主), the heavenly stem of the day pillar. The Day Master represents you, and the entire chart is read with the Day Master at its core.

BaZi’s core algorithm: Ziping School

BaZi’s mainstream algorithm is the Ziping School, founded by Xu Zi-Ping in the Song dynasty (around the 10th century). Core characteristics: Day-Master-centered + monthly-command-weighted + Yong-Shen-driven + Wu Xing generation/overcoming. Mio&Gem’s tool uses this school.

The 4 core characteristics of Ziping School:

1. Day-Master-centered: the entire chart reads with the heavenly stem of the birth day (Day Master) at the core, unlike pre-Tang systems that centered on the year pillar
2. Monthly-command-weighted: the energy of the birth month (Yue Ling) has the largest influence on the Day Master and is the heaviest weight in strength evaluation
3. Yong-Shen-driven: the “most useful” energy is derived from Day Master strength + monthly command structure, called Yong Shen
4. Wu-Xing-based: generation/overcoming relationships among the five elements drive the inference

The Di Tian Sui (Jing Tu, late Yuan / early Ming) states: “With the Day [Master] as the primary sovereign, and the controlling element of the Monthly Command as the target, the Year and Hour pillars are weighed for the fluctuations of fortune.” This sentence anchors the most central logic of Ziping School and draws a clear line between it and the pre-Tang “year-master” tradition.

The defining feature of Ziping School is that it’s derivable, verifiable, and not dependent on intuitive judgment. Given the same birth time, different Ziping School practitioners should produce the same chart structure (eight characters, Yong Shen, Xi Shen / Ji Shen) because the algorithm is mathematically defined. This is the most visible distinction from other schools (Blind School, Zi Wei, Qi Zheng Si Yu).

How BaZi judges what you need: Yong Shen

Yong Shen (用神) is the energy your BaZi chart most needs to fill in, not simply “the lowest-percentage element.” Yong Shen is the core output of BaZi inference and the basis on which Mio&Gem’s tool decides the main crystal element.

Key clarification: Yong Shen is not “the Five Element with the lowest percentage.” This is the most common public misconception about BaZi. The real algorithm makes a combined judgment based on four dimensions: Day Master attribute, Day Master strength, monthly command state, and Wu Xing generation/overcoming structure.

Example: if your Day Master is Fire and Water sits at 5% (the lowest), but your Day Master is already weak and Fire is also low, then Yong Shen is not Water (Water overcomes Fire and weakens you further); it’s Wood (Wood generates Fire, which is what you actually need).

The Zi Ping Zhen Quan (Shen Xiaozhan, Qing dynasty) states: “The Yong Shen of the Eight Characters must be sought from the Monthly Command. Pairing the Heavenly Stem of the Day with the Earthly Branch of the Monthly Command, differing relationships of generation and overcoming emerge, and from these, the structures (ge ju) are distinguished.” This anchors the most authoritative source of Ziping School Yong Shen algorithm: monthly command decides structure; structure decides Yong Shen. Yong Shen doesn’t stand alone; it pairs with Xi Shen and Ji Shen: Xi Shen is the energy that supports Yong Shen (e.g., Yong Shen is Fire, Xi Shen is Wood, because Wood generates Fire); Ji Shen is the energy that overcomes Yong Shen or has already grown excessive (e.g., Yong Shen is Fire, Ji Shen is Water, because Water overcomes Fire). BaZi isn’t fixed: Da Yun + Liu Nian

A BaZi chart is fixed at birth (the 8 characters don’t change). But your actual fortune shifts dynamically over time, because Da Yun and Liu Nian overlay the chart. The natal chart is the baseline; Da Yun and Liu Nian are the post-natal energy environments.

Da Yun (大运) is a 10-year life cycle representing the macro-energy environment you live through. Each person’s Da Yun arranges into 8 steps (covering roughly 80 years), derived from the chart’s month pillar. Da Yun overlays the chart, producing generation/overcoming interactions with the original 8 characters. The result: your Five Element ratio, Yong Shen, and Xi/Ji Shen may all shift slightly during this 10-year stretch.

Liu Nian (流年) is the annual energy field, an external influence on your chart and current Da Yun. Liu Nian switches at Lichun (Beginning of Spring), with a new stem-branch pair each year (60-year complete cycle). Liu Nian’s energy weight is smaller than Da Yun’s, but it changes annually and acts as “this year’s catalyst.”

The three-layer overlay structure: natal chart is the lifetime baseline (largest weight); Da Yun is the 10-year environment (medium weight); Liu Nian is this year’s catalyst (smaller weight). Because of this three-layer overlay, Mio&Gem’s crystal recommendation adjusts every few years (when Da Yun shifts) and fine-tunes annually (when Liu Nian changes). BaZi and Wu Xing

Wu Xing (Five Elements, 五行) is the foundational language of BaZi. Every BaZi calculation runs in Wu Xing (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) generation and overcoming. Without Wu Xing there is no BaZi.

How they connect:

• Each heavenly stem maps to one Five Element (Jia/Yi → Wood, Bing/Ding → Fire, etc.)
• Each earthly branch also maps to one Five Element (Zi → Water, Wu → Fire, etc.)
• Once your 8 characters are fixed, the chart’s Five Element ratio is set

Is BaZi superstition?

BaZi’s algorithmic layer is mathematically defined, built on astronomical computation (solar terms, true solar time) and Wu Xing structure (generation/overcoming). Every step is derivable and reproducible by hand. This layer is not superstition. The interpretive layer (how a Yong Shen maps to specific life scenarios) draws on experience and is empirical knowledge, not divination. Mio&Gem’s tool only operates the algorithmic layer; it does not predict events.

Can BaZi predict the future?

It cannot predict specific events. BaZi describes energy structure and energy environment, not “this year you will find a partner / get a job.” Specific events depend on five layers working together: your choices, your specific situation, Liu Nian tendency, Da Yun background, and natal chart. BaZi only describes the foundational tendency layer.

Can I learn BaZi myself?

Yes. The basics (4 pillars / 8 characters, Wu Xing, generation/overcoming, Day Master, Yong Shen) have wide public coverage; a few months of self-study cover basic reading. BaZi in Singapore: where to start

In Singapore and across the region, BaZi (Eight Characters, 八字) is treated as a serious study rather than a novelty, and most of the well known practitioners teach and publish in English. If you are starting from scratch, you do not need to learn the manual calculation first. The useful entry point is to read your own chart once, then learn the parts that actually drive a decision: your Day Master (Ri Zhu, 日主), whether it is strong or weak, and your favorable element (Yong Shen, 用神).

How is BaZi different from zodiac animals or Western astrology?

BaZi reads 4 pillars / 8 characters (year/month/day/hour stems and branches), the most granular of the three. The Chinese zodiac only reads the year branch (your animal sign), a 1-of-12 simplification. Western astrology uses sun signs by month, a different astronomical basis (BaZi uses solar terms; astrology uses ecliptic segmentation). The three measure different things: BaZi reads energy structure (finest), zodiac reads year-energy baseline (coarsest), astrology reads personality tendency (middle).

I don’t have my exact birth time, can I still get a BaZi reading?

Yes but partial. Year, month, and day pillars don’t depend on the hour, so three pillars are valid; only the hour pillar is missing. The hour pillar carries about 25% of the chart’s energy weight, so Yong Shen precision drops, but a baseline recommendation still works. If your time is just imprecise (off by 1-2 hours), run two versions and compare.

Will my BaZi reading change over time?

The chart (8 characters) doesn’t change; that’s set at birth. But your Yong Shen, Xi/Ji Shen, and recommended crystal shift as Da Yun (every 10 years) and Liu Nian (every year) change. The crystal you wore at 30 may need swapping at 40, not because the crystal failed, but because your energy environment shifted. Run a reading annually to get the current best fit.

Is Mio&Gem’s BaZi reading accurate compared to other apps?

Depends on the algorithm. If the other app uses Ziping School, the baseline Yong Shen should match Mio&Gem’s; the crystal pick may differ (different brands run different INTENT systems and inventories). 平太阳时（钟表上看到的时间）跟真太阳时（太阳实际位置对应的时间）有偏差，原因有两个：

1。 经度偏差：钟表按时区走，但每个城市的经度不同。每偏 1 度经度 = 4 分钟时间偏差。北京时间用的是东 120 度的时间，你在新加坡（东 103 度）看到的“中午 12 点”其实跟太阳实际位置差约 68 分钟。
2。 均时差（Equation of Time）：地球轨道偏心 + 黄赤交角导致全年有 ±16 分钟的偏差。

这一节是关键澄清。工具源代码里有个 18% 阈值，有些读者以为“工具的核心算法是看哪个五行 < 18% 就推哪个”，这是误解。

事实：18% 阈值只在从格（命局极端偏向某一行的 special case）时才触发。从格命局极罕见，大多数命盘是普通格局，走的是 §3 描述的子平派标准用神算法。

什么是从格？

从格是子平派识别的一类极端命局，日主太弱（< 8% 比劫印根）且某种五行能量主导整个命盘。这种情况下日主不能“自立”，反而要“顺从”主导能量。

子平派识别 6 种从格：

• 从官格（日主弱，官杀主导）
• 从儿格（日主弱，食伤主导）

Solar terms are the boundaries where the month pillar switches. For example, the precise moment of Lichun in 2026 decides the month pillar for anyone born around that time. Most lookup tables give “Lichun = February 4th” as a coarse marker, with errors up to several hours.

Mio&Gem’s tool uses NOAA formulas (Newton’s iteration on solar apparent longitude, 5 iterations) to compute solar terms with minute-level precision. That’s about 10 times more precise than typical algorithms, for anyone born near a solar term boundary (24 solar terms per year, anyone born near any boundary could land in the wrong month pillar with a coarse tool), this 10x precision directly decides whether the month pillar is right.

True solar time correction: used to correct the birth moment.

Mean solar time (the time on the clock) differs from true solar time (the time corresponding to the sun’s actual position) for two reasons:

1. Longitude offset: clocks run by time zone, but each city’s longitude differs. Each degree of longitude offset = 4 minutes of time offset. Beijing time uses the time of 120°E; in Singapore (103°E), what the clock shows as “noon” actually differs from the sun’s actual position by about 68 minutes.
2. Equation of Time: Earth’s orbital eccentricity + axial tilt produces ±16 minutes of variation across the year.

The tool uses NOAA’s standard Equation of Time formula, accurate to ±3 seconds (10x more precise than the Spencer formula). All BaZi calculations are based on true solar time, not mean solar time.

Step a: strength evaluation

The tool reads your chart’s overall ratio and grades the Day Master strength into 6 levels: extremely strong, strong, mid-strong, mid-weak, weak, extremely weak. This is the internal “strength evaluation” step.

Judgment dimension: energy supporting you (same element + the element generating you) vs energy draining you (the element you generate + the element you overcome + the element overcoming you). Different ratios fall into different levels.

Step b: baseline Yong Shen

Based on the 6 strength levels, the tool gives a “baseline Yong Shen.” This step is the internal “baseline Yong Shen calculation.” Rules:

• Extremely strong / strong → restrain-and-channel mode; Yong Shen direction is “what you generate” or “what overcomes you”
• Mid-strong → light-channel mode; Yong Shen direction is “what you generate”
• Mid-weak → support mode; Yong Shen direction is “you” or “what generates you”
• Weak / extremely weak → strong-support mode; Yong Shen direction is “what generates you” + “you”

Step c: monthly command pattern refinement

The baseline Yong Shen still needs to be adjusted for the monthly command (the energy of your birth month). This step is the internal “monthly command refinement step,” which considers your structure (the chart pattern set by the monthly command).

The Zi Ping Zhen Quan (Shen Xiaozhan, Qing Dynasty) states: “The Yong Shen of the Eight Characters must be sought from the Monthly Command. This section is a key clarification. There’s an 18% threshold in the tool’s source code; some readers think “the tool’s core algorithm is, recommend whichever Five Element falls below 18%.” That’s a misunderstanding.

Fact: the 18% threshold only triggers in Cong Ge (charts extremely tilted toward one element, a special case). Cong Ge charts are extremely rare, most charts are normal patterns and run the standard Ziping School algorithm described in §3.

What is Cong Ge?

Cong Ge is a class of extreme charts identified by Ziping School: the Day Master is too weak (< 8% of supporting roots) and one element dominates the entire chart. In this situation, the Day Master can’t “stand alone” and must “follow” the dominant energy.

Ziping School identifies 6 Cong Ge types:

• Cong Cai Ge (weak Day Master, wealth element dominant)
• Cong Guan Ge (weak Day Master, officer element dominant)
• Cong Er Ge (weak Day Master, output element dominant)
• Cong Wang Ge (extreme self-element dominance, ≥ 65%)

If a Cong Ge chart is detected and the lowest-percentage element falls below 18%, the tool force-overrides the pro algorithm’s Cong Ge Yong Shen and uses “Five Elements deficit-fill method” (directly fill the lowest-percentage element).

Why? Because the consumer interface needs visual consistency, if the tool shows you “Water at 5%” but recommends “Fire-element crystal” (the traditional Cong Ge theory), users get confused (“I’m lowest in Water, why isn’t it recommending Water?”).

So in this special case, Mio&Gem’s tool gives the consumer “deficit-fill,” visual (chart) and recommendation (main stone) align; trust doesn’t break.

Important: the 18% threshold is not the tool’s main logic. The vast majority of charts go through the §3 standard Yong Shen algorithm. 18% only triggers in Cong Ge + obvious deficit, an extreme case affecting a tiny fraction of charts.

Everything described above runs inside a free BaZi calculator. You enter your birth date, time and city, and the tool returns your four pillars, your Five Elements (Wu Xing, 五行) balance, your Day Master strength, your favorable element (Yong Shen, 用神), your current Da Yun and Liu Nian, and a crystal matched to that result. There is no login wall and no charge to read your chart.

What we sell is the physical piece, gold-plated crystal made in our own studio, not the reading. The reading stays free so you can check it whenever your Da Yun or the year changes, which is exactly when your favorable element, and the crystal that fits it, can shift.

Can the tool make mistakes? (at the algorithm level)

The Ziping School core algorithm doesn’t make mistakes (the algorithm is mathematically defined, not interpretive). But edge cases can give unexpected results: (1) birth time isn’t precise enough (a 1-2 hour offset may cross a solar term); (2) without longitude/latitude, only rough computation is possible; (3) extremely rare special charts (Cong Ge, Hua Qi Ge) use simplified handling rather than full traditional theory. Mio&Gem’s tool has guardrails for (2) and (3), but (1) depends on what you input.

What if I used the wrong birth time?

If off by a few minutes to an hour: the hour pillar may be wrong, but Day Master, month pillar, and year pillar usually stay the same. Re-enter the correct time and run again. If off by hours to a day: Day Master and month pillar may both shift, and the entire recommendation will change. If you don’t know your precise birth time: run two versions (e.g., 6am vs 8pm) and compare; if both give the same recommendation, your reading isn’t sensitive to time precision; if they differ, you need to find a more accurate time.

What features will the tool add later?

No major algorithmic changes planned in the short term, the Ziping School core + NOAA astronomical layer is stable. Future possibilities: (1) more detailed fortune reports (currently a simple version); (2) Liu Yue (monthly) level recommendation fine-tuning (currently to Liu Nian); (3) language expansion.
